The fruit
The Guava [Psidium guajava] is a round or pear shaped tropical fruit with a white, yellow or pink interior, which is fleshy and interspersed with many hard seeds. It grows on relatively small, narrow trunked trees, which are characterised by an almost total absence of bark.
Fruity Facts
The Aztecs called them xalxocotl ('sand plum') because of the many small edible pips. The Spanish conquistadors carried it, along with the papaya, to Asia. Now to be found growing as far afield as California, Uruguay, Mexico, Israel, South Africa, India. |

Uses
The ripe Guava has a sweet and distinctive smell reminiscent of quince. Often parts of the skin of the Guava are processed with the flesh to give the resulting flesh a fuller flavour which otherwise has a delicate strawberry note. Guava flesh is used mainly for conversion into juices, nectars, drinks, jams, jellies, fruit cheese, and fruit bars.
