The fruit
The papaya is a large pear shaped fruit that looks a bit like a large mango, with bright golden-yellow skin. The skin is waxy and thin but fairly tough. On the inside, its bright orange flesh is juicy and silky smooth with a sweet-tart flavour. Some liken the flavour to melon and apricot. The large center cavity is filled with shiny, black seeds – about the size of peas. These black seeds are edible and have a sharp spicy peppery taste. They are generally discarded, but sometimes ground up and used as a substitute for black peppers.

Fruity Facts
Papaya is being hailed as one of nature’s superfruit by nutritionists as it boasts a wealth of health benefits and is a rich source of antioxidant nutrients including Vitamin C and lutein (pronounced LOO-teen).

Traditionally the papaya has been used to aid digestion. Papain, the enzyme in Papaya, helps to dissolve and digest protein, thus easing stomach ailments and aiding digestion. Because papain breaks down tough meat fibers, it is often used in restaurants and is the major ingredient in commercial meat tenderizers!

Uses
One of the easiest (and most delightful) ways to eat papaya is to eat it just like a melon. After washing the fruit, cut it lengthwise, scoop out the seeds and then eat it with a spoon. For a little extra zest, you can squeeze lemon or lime juice on top.
