The fruit
First bought to Europe by Columbus, named for its [vaguely] pine-cone appearance, the fruit [Ananas Comosus] grows on a spiny, agave cactus-like plant [albeit much smaller] that is a herbaceous perennial. The pineapple is a 'multiple fruit' a collective of small, botanically individual fruits that form the whole. This is denoted by the mosaic-like, hexagonal 'diamond' patterns that make up the tough, bumpy skin, which is fragrant and yellow when ripe, sometimes mottled with green or brown.
Fruity Facts
Native to Central and South America, it is now grown commercially throughout the tropics, and especially in Southeast Asia, Central and South America, and Hawaii.

Uses
The fruit’s yellow or white flesh is very juicy when ripe and can be rather fibrous. Tangy, sweet and of tart flavour, it is eaten fresh, used in desserts, salads, preserves, and as garnish. It is also used for making juices.
